NEW YORK - On May 9, 2011, during a special meeting, the General Executive Board of Workers United, an affiliate of SEIU, elected Noel Beasley the union's new president by acclamation. He succeeds Bruce Raynor, who resigned effective May 7. Beasley, who has served as director of the Chicago and Midwest Regional Joint Board and executive vice president of Workers United, has a long history with the union and a proven record of success.

"Our members in the United States, Puerto Rico and Canada are facing unprecedented challenges as our countries struggle to rebound from the recession," Beasley said. "I am honored and humbled to be elected to lead our union."

April 29 – The Right Honourable David Johnston, Governor General of Canada, and his wife Mrs. Sharon Johnston, attended the wedding of His Royal Highness Prince William and Miss Catherine Middleton today, at Westminster Abbey, London, England.

“My wife, Sharon, and I are honoured to attend the wedding of His Royal Highness Prince William and Miss Catherine Middleton,” said His Excellency in a statement released by the Office of the Secretary to the Governor General. “As representative of the Queen in Canada, I am truly privileged to represent Canadians at this very special occasion”.

Their Excellencies represented Canadians in their attire, as well as with their attendance.

His Excellency wore a suit wore a Coppley morning suit, purchased at Harry Rosen in Ottawa.

Coppley, a company whose clothing is made “with Canadian integrity in every stich”, has a history in Hamilton, Ontario that dates back to 1856. Employees of Coppley have been members of our union, Workers United Ontario Council, for over 50 years.

Illinois Governor Pat Quinn has appointed Joe Costigan as the new director of the Department of Labor.  Joe is the current treasurer and political director of the Chicago and Midwest Regional Joint Board.
